What is the incentive/subsidy on offer?

The scheme provides wage incentives for employers who recruit an 18 -24 year old who has been receiving benefits for at least six months through Jobcentre Plus.  The aim of the wage incentive scheme is to encourage employers to give young jobless people a chance in a weaker market by encouraging them to fill vacancies with young people. This is at a time when they might be overlooked because of a lack of skills or experience and the scheme can therefore help reduce the impact of the recession on young people.

How much is the incentive/subsidy?

Employers may be eligible for wage incentives of up to £2,275 per eligible young person employed. Different rates for full time and part time apply.

Capital, revenue or both?

Revenue.

Restrictions

Wage incentives are primarily available to private, voluntary and community sectors and social enterprise employers. Central government departments, their executive agencies and Non-Departmental Public Bodies (NDPBs) will be excluded from claiming them, however the wider public sector such as NHS trusts, will not.

What could it do for your company?

More and more businesses are considering their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), that is, how they can create a positive impact on society while doing business and how they can support the local economy. Providing opportunites for young people can contribute to your CSR strategy.
